What Is RTP in Slots?

RTP stands for return to player. It is the percentage of all money staked on a game that the game is designed to return to players over a very large number of rounds.

Updated 28 October 2026 · plain-English guide

How RTP works

If a slot has a 96% RTP, the game is designed to return 96 units for every 100 staked, on average, across millions of spins. The other 4% is the house edge. RTP is a long-run average, not a promise for a session: in a few hundred spins you can finish well above or well below it, and any single spin is random.

What RTP does not tell you

RTP does not tell you how often a game pays, how big the wins are, or how long a bankroll lasts. Two slots can share the same RTP and feel completely different, because one pays small wins often and the other pays rarely but bigger. That difference is volatility.

Different RTP versions of the same game

Some studios publish a game in more than one RTP setting and let each casino choose. That means the same slot can have a different RTP at different casinos, and the figure on a review can differ from what you see in-game. Check the game's info or help screen for the RTP at the casino you are playing on.

RTP in the games we review

The listed RTPs in our reviews range from 94.12% (Royal Potato: Dream Drop) to 98% (Moneyplane: Bail2Win). Most slots sit between about 96% and 96.6%. Crash and instant games, such as Aviamasters 2 and Moneyplane: Bail2Win, often list 97% to 98%. We quote the studio's figure and say so when it is a range.

Everything here is demo-play tested. Scores are our opinion on how a game plays, not a prediction of results, and RTP, volatility and max win are the studio's figures. You must be 18 or older. Gambling can be addictive, so play responsibly.

FAQ

What is a good RTP for a slot?

Higher is better for the player on paper, and many modern slots list between 96% and 97%. A figure below about 95% is on the low side. The studio or casino publishes the number, and it applies over the very long run.

Does a higher RTP mean I will win more?

No. RTP is an average over a huge number of spins and says nothing about a single session. Every spin is independent and random.

Is RTP the same as hit frequency?

No. Hit frequency is how often a spin pays anything. RTP is how much is returned in total. A game can hit often and still have a modest RTP.

Does bonus buy change the RTP?

It can. Some games publish a different RTP for bought features, so check the game info. See bonus buy explained.
